New results from a survey of 1,122 post-menopausal women in Asia found that nearly half (48.5 percent) were not aware whether or not they had osteoporosis despite being hospitalized with a fragility fracture. A fragility fracture is one potential indicator of osteoporosis, along with BMD measurements, family history and other factors, according to International Osteoporosis Foundation (IOF). Of the women who were told that they have osteoporosis (51.5 percent), 40.

The so-called RANK protein and the molecule that binds to it, the RANK ligand or RANKL, form a focus of the work of Josef Penninger, director of the Institute of Molecular Biotechnology (IMBA) in Vienna. In 1999 his group deleted the RANKL gene from mice and showed that the RANK/RANKL system was the “master regulator” governing bone loss (Kong et al. 1999 Nature 402, 304-309).

Animal studies suggest that adding flaxseed oil to the diet could reduce the risk of osteoporosis in post-menopausal women and women with diabetes, according to a report to be published in the International Journal of Food Safety, Nutrition and Public Health. Mer Harvi and colleagues at the National Research Center, in Cairo, Egypt, have studied the effect of diabetes on bone health and evaluated how flaxseed oil in the diet might delay the onset of osteoporosis.

A serious bicycle accident left David Goodman with a severely shattered left hip. But ever since Dr. Michael Stover of Loyola University Health System rebuilt Goodman’s pelvis and replaced his hip, the 67-year-old Chicago resident has been able to do everything that he could before his accident — without pain. Goodman works out or does yoga six days a week. Four months after surgery, he climbed a mountain in Israel.

Cervical spondylosis is a general term for age-related wear and tear affecting the joints in the neck. It is also known as cervical osteoarthritis and degenerative osteoarthritis. This condition usually appears in men and women older than 40 and progresses with age. Men usually develop it at an earlier age than women do. It can lead to episodes of stiffness and neck pain. With age, the bones and cartilage that make up the backbone and neck gradually deteriorate.

Charcot-Marie-Tooth Disease (CMT) , also known as Chacot-Marie-Tooth hereditary neuropathy, peroneal muscular atrophy, and hereditary motor and sensory neuropathy, is a genetic disease of nerves, typically with progressive muscle weakness, particularly the arms and legs. The hallmark feature of CMT is a clear wasting of the distal extremities, especially the peroneal muscle groups in the calves - the patient develops stork legs.

From professional athletes to weekend warriors, the condition known as “runner’s knee” is a painful and potentially debilitating injury suffered by millions of people - although until now, it has been unclear just what causes it. But new research from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill has zeroed in on what appear to be the main culprits of the condition, formally known as patellofemoral pain syndrome.
