The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has expanded Titan Spine’s ENDOSKELTON® TA Vertebral Body Replacement Device (VBR) 510k to include an Interbody Fusion Device indication. Under its expanded 510K indication, the Endoskeleton® TA Interbody Fusion Device is approved for use in skeletally mature patients with Degenerative Disc Disease (DDD) at one or two contiguous levels from L2-S1.

The aim of this study is to prepare sphene coating on titanium alloy (Ti-6Al-4V) for orthopaedic applications using the plasma spray method. The results indicated that sphene coating was obtained with a uniform and dense microstructure. Plasma-sprayed sphene coating possessed a significantly improved bonding strength and chemical stability compared with that plasma-sprayed hydroxyapatite (HAp) coating.

Custom-made insoles known as foot orthoses can reduce foot pain caused by arthritis, overly prominent big toe joints and highly arched feet, a new systematic review shows. A team of Cochrane Researchers found that custom orthoses were safe interventions for foot pain in a number of different conditions. However, more research is required to develop an in depth understanding of their effectiveness.

Researchers at The University of Nottingham have shown an association between certain past diagnostic radiation procedures and an increased risk of young-onset prostate cancer - a rare form of prostate cancer which affects about 10 per cent of all men diagnosed with the disease.

A severe complication of the Marfan syndrome is that the aorta may split and be torn apart. The patient can be protected if the syndrome is diagnosed and treated in good time. In the current edition of the Deutsches Arzteblatt International (Dtsch Arztebl Int 2008; 105[27]: 483-91), the human geneticist Mine Arslan-Kirchner from Hannover University Medical School and his coauthors present additional studies on Marfan patients.

When a person is losing a significant amount of weight, they expect to notice changes in their body. However, they may overlook changes happening in their bones. During weight loss through calorie-restricted diets, bones are being remodeled - breaking down old bone and forming new bone - at an accelerated rate. At the same time, bone density is decreasing, causing increased fragility.
